Hybrid Laptops with discrete GPU connected to display error

The update fails with an interesting, and unique error message which says: Looking at the Reddit discussion, Alienware Product specialist, Umar Khan, acknowledge the bug that Alienware users are receiving during the Windows 10 v1803.  The error message points out to the Hybrid Graphics Platform on the Alienware system. This bug needs to be addressed by Microsoft. It seems Microsoft is aware of this bug and has blocked the Windows 10 v1803 to be rolled out for Alienware laptop. The company is working on a fix for this, and have planned the patch it around the fourth week of May, after which the block will be lifted. Says Microsoft,

Thanks to Umar, we do have a solution, which is unofficial but works for now. The first thing you should know that you do not need to uninstall anything.  He sounds confident about the solution on Reddit as he has tested on various systems. However, you may do it at your own risk.

Microsoft is currently blocking these models from installing the update due to a known incompatibility that may cause these devices to display a black screen after resuming from battery saver mode. For this reason, we do not recommend attempting to work around the current block to install the April 2018 Update. Microsoft is currently working on a solution that will be provided in a future Windows Update, after which these devices will be able to install the April 2018 Update. If you are receiving this message, you do not need to take any action at this time. There are no apps that need to be uninstalled. Windows Update will notify you when the April 2018 Update is ready for your device.

This may or may not work for you. The reason I am saying this is because few have reported it working, and few say it doesn’t work on their system. For example, one person with Alienware 13r3, 17r4, Cassinis, While another person with Alienware 15 R3 – 7700HQ GTX1060 G-SYNC, said it failed for him. The scenario also tells us one more thing. Not lot of consumers with Alienware laptops participated in the Insiders Program. I am not surprised though as gamers would rather want their machines to be stable for the gaming experience, then pass on the feedback.
